Organizational Culture - NTPC

Organizational Culture:

                            The set of important understandings, such as norms, values, attitudes and beliefs, shared by organizational members can be called as organizational culture. The concept of organizational culture has assumed huge importance in the last fifteen years in the organizational matters. Until then, it seemed that it was enough to understand an organization's strategy and its structure in order to have a good explanation for what it did. But later on, they began to see that much more was going on in organizations than just developing new products and services and paying attention to hierarchy ad power.Researchers  began to use the concept of culture from anthropology to understand some of these basic differences.

Organizational Culture in NTPC:

                                                  NTPC Ltd. is a Public Sector Company set up in 1975 by the Govt. of India to meet the growing demands of energy in the country. It is now a power major, becoming the world's sixth largest power producer and India's largest power generator. It has won the award "Great place to work with" many a times in the recent past. We will look at the organizational culture in NTPC which made it such a successful PSU and made it a MAHARATNA.


                                                         NTPC has got an unique organisational culture. NTPC tries its level best so that only the best managers join the company. NTPC believes in the dead lines in the strict sense, when it comes to any completion of work or project .The initial batch of managers joined the company from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Steel Authority of India Limited .NTPC give more importance to performance and thus linked the promotions to performance rather than the years of services .That is to say experience has got less importance than performance.
                                                      The work culture of NTPC is fully performance
driven , full of challenge for its employees and executives by the use of bench marking system. The organisation had adopted the mind set of viewing problems as opportunities and this culture motivated the employees to perform more and more and give the optimum output for the organisation. NTPC believes in the philosophy of people first than all other things in the organisation . NTPC had created an environment where the employees feel free and happy to work and where there is a sense of belongingness and commitment . NTPC takes utmost care about the social security of all the employees and the executives to say this is a part of NTPC’s culture and organisational management system . It is very important that the employees know that they will be looked after, and that is the starting point for high performance. NTPC encourages a lot so that the employees must participate in the organisational management process at various levels in the organisation. Professional councils are encouraged a lot so as to gain the  organisational goal in a stipulated time .

NTPC provides numerous mechanisms for employee participation in various activities and there is a feeling of being taken care of by the organization. These values have been developed and nurtured over the years by our founding leaders and subsequent leaders.NTPC changed the oft-held perception that as a public enterprise it would have a laid-back organizational culture. NTPC had a high focus on training and development and merit was an important consideration for career growth. Its achievement was particularly noteworthy as it had successfully developed a challenging work culture even though it was 90% government-owned.
